Homemade skincare hacks to try during lockdown

By  |  0 Comments

Lockdown is a weird one, isn’t it? Whereas ordinarily, many of us are so busy with our working demands and family that we end up neglecting our self-care regimes, lockdown presents us with a unique opportunity to maximise it. Alongside giving us extra time to try other new things – such as experimenting with new hair styles, perfecting our winged liner and beginning new skincare routines – we can try out new hobbies.
Now is the perfect time for us to try out a few homemade beauty tricks – with plenty of downtime available if things don’t turn out quite as expected.
Lisa Borg, an expert nutritionist at the Pulse Light Clinic in London, has revealed some of her favourite DIY skincare recipes to keep complexions looking fresh during quarantine.

Lisa Borg’s DIY Skincare Recipes

The Skin Booster, created by Lisa to counteract:

– Dry Skin
– Wrinkles
– Age Spots

Lisa says: “To create my Skin Booster, you’ll need to mix 1 x tablespoon of avocado, 1 x tablespoon of honey & 6 drops of lavender essential oil.

Apply to clean skin, relax for 15 minutes and then wipe off with a tissue. Following this, rinse your skin with lukewarm water and pat dry.”

The Skin Soother, created by Lisa to counteract:

– Acne-Prone Skin
– Scarring
– Pigmentation

Lisa says: “To create my Skin Soothing recipe, you’ll need to mix 1/2 a teaspoon of turmeric, 1/2 a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 x teaspoon yoghurt, 1 x tablespoon of raw honey & 3 drops of tea tree essential oil.

Aim for a thick consistency that doesn’t drip. If you find it’s is too runny, add in some oats to soak up the liquid and thicken consistency.

Apply to clean skin, relax for 15 minutes and then rinse well before patting the face dry.

CAUTIONS: Before applying to your face, patch test on a small area of your skin first, because some skin types have an allergic reaction to turmeric. This ingredient can also leave the skin with a yellow tinge, which can be removed with gentle soap and water. Use turmeric carefully, because it will stain what it comes into contact with.”

The Skin Revitaliser, created by Lisa to counteract:

– Dull Complexions
– Great for normal skin types

Lisa says: “To create my Skin Revitalising recipe, you’ll need to mix 2 x teaspoons of sea salt with 4 x teaspoons of honey.

Apply evenly to clean skin, rub gently in circular motions all over, relax for 15 minutes then rinse & pat your face dry.

Following this, apply your favourite moisturiser to seal in the goodness – or smooth 1/2 a teaspoon of coconut oil over your face (avoiding the eyes) before using a tissue to pat off any excess oil after 10 minutes.”

“A great grand finale to conclude any night-time skincare regime is to use a Vitamin C based serum.

Don’t have any? Don’t worry. You can make your own by combining Aloe Vera gel, Vitamin C powder and an essential oil (lemon, lavender or tea tree.) Avoid using before sun exposure.”

Other household skincare & wellness hacks from Lisa:

– Raw honey has properties that can be used to treat & heal burns, dandruff, dermatitis, psoriasis and more.
– Regular use of turmeric can lighten age spots & hyperpigmentation.
– Lavender oil promotes good sleep and reduces anxiety.
– Using a Vitamin C based serum daily has been reported to reduce ageing by as much as 10 years in 3 months!
