Culottes comeback – a short cut to style
They’re not quite shorts and not quite trousers — but heavens they’re stylish.
I’m talking about this summer’s hottest trend — culottes — the latest item to shake up your silhouette.
Aside from dungarees, culottes have perhaps become the most unprecedented clothing infatuation of 2014.
When worn correctly these provide the freedom of a skirt — but the security of trousers.
Thanks to designers such as Mulberry and Victoria Beckham, these calf-skimming trousers have undergone a sophisticated makeover.
From languid cotton, to silk or patterned pairs, culottes went down a storm at this year’s runway shows.
Most were loose and cut just below the knee, with models looking sharp and sexy in the flattering emsemble.
Predicted as the trouser shape of the season, they’re also the perfect way to update your wardrobe.
Ever so easy to wear, this is a look which will provide you a smooth transition from summer to autumn.
And, while it’s still warm, a pair of cropped culottes paired with a shift top make for a simple summer outfit.
Wear them with a matching top and wedges for a minimalistic look — perfect for holidays.
When it comes to evening wear, opt for some luxury culottes, worn with heels and a statement tee for a polished feel.
Right now I’m loving this silk pair from M&S, which will look stunning when worn with a brightly-hued top and statement necklace.
Featuring clean-lines and tailored cuts, culottes can take you from boardroom to dancefloor with the help of a few accessories.
If you’re feeling particularly brave, take inspiration from Mulberry’s spring / summer 2014 show and opt for a pair of leathers.
Culottes offer plenty of fashionable alternatives in terms of fabrics, textures and styles on the high street right now.
For a more modern look, try out some patterned or pastel-hued culottes, available in stores such as Dorothy Perkins and Primark.
But for a more timeless look, the likes of Zara and M&S offer myriad options to keep your outfit classic.
What I love about culottes is that they’re utterly feminist — with a hint of Audrey Hepburn.
