Summer workwear guide – stay cool during the heatwave
AS much as I love shopping and putting together new outfits, getting dressed for work during the summer can often be a drag.
It’s the season we have all been begging for, yet in typical Scottish fashion we just can’t seem to handle it once it actually arrives.
It has many plus points, summer does — impromptu barbecue’s, holidays and, of course, no longer having to try and ‘do battle’ with an umbrella.
But let’s be honest, there are also some rather tedious points as well. The ones that particularly rile me include being terrorised by water-pistol wielding children, my hairs natural ability to emulate Diana Ross’ doo, and the panic of getting dressed for work without, shudder, having tights as a companion.
All is not lost, however; in fact it is still possible to enjoy summer and dress office-appropriate during the heatwave.
Deciding on what you wear should be based on maintaining a level of professionalism but being comfortable at the same time.
Of course it all depends on where you work. However I’d always advise that, no matter where you’re based, flip-flops and micro shorts will not endear you to your boss.
One item that’s worth an investment when it comes to summer workwear is the classic shirt dress.
Utilitarian inspired looks are also in right now so anything in shades of khaki, navy or camel will give you extra style points.
When it comes to shorts or skirts, be sure to keep them at a demure length of either just above or below the knee.
Tailored trousers are also a big must for the workwear wardrobe, as they are cool, comfortable and can be teamed with a shirt or simple tee no matter what the weather.
Dressing for the office during the summer is all about the right fabrics, which means swapping your structured wool blazer for a lightweight and breathable linen alternative.
For footwear, the stacked heel sandal is perfect for the warmer weather. Heels can be exhausting, but you can still add a bit of height in a reasonable stacked heel that still feels feminine and classy.
