Dealing with seasonal hair loss
If you’ve been experiencing more hair loss than normal, don’t panic – there is such a thing as seasonal hair loss. According to Anabel Kingsley, a trichologist (which is a dermatologist that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp) at Philip Kingsley, studies have found that we have a higher number of hairs when we enter the telogen phase in July, meaning we notice more shedding come October and November time.
Just as the health of your skin is impacted based on the change in seasons, so is the hair loss you’ll suffer during winter.
Here are some top tips on how to deal with seasonal hair loss during winter.
Take the right vitamins
While supplements may not prevent your hair from shedding, they can strengthen and thicken the hair strands that you already have, helping to disguise any thinning. Look for supplements containing high levels of biotin. Our recommendation is the Wicked Gummy Co. ‘Hair, Skin & Nails’. The Hair, Skin & Nails vegan gummies contain a potent blend of biotin and vitamins C & E, amongst others. Take two each day for best results.
Use the right kind of shampoo and conditioner
If you’re dealing with hair loss in the winter, you’ve got to switch up your hair care routine to include products that work best for your hair type. Haircare needs to be taken just as seriously as skincare. We recommend Briogero Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumising Spray for all hair types.
Scalp massage
Some studies have suggested that scalp massage has the potential to increase hair density by improving blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles, as well as increasing the activity of genes known to promote hair growth. An additional benefit is that massage helps to lower stress levels, another factor relating to hair loss.
Gentle styling
Avoid braids or ponytails that may pull on your hair at the root and potentially lead to excessive shedding. Curlers or straightening irons may also damage or break the hair shaft. We suggest using these tools less frequently, aiming for once/twice per week.
Hair Mask
The occasional hair mask during the winter is also a great way to give your hair the moisture it needs to become less prone to breaking. A deep conditioning mask is a great way to keep your hair hydrated, and prevent it from drying out and becoming dull and lifeless. We recommend cruelty-free brand NouNou’s hair masks, sold in Alchemy Hair salon Glasgow.
