Review: Keeper’s Rest, the perfect Staycation to enjoy Scottish scenery ❄️
If you’re looking to escape the chaos of the world for under £100, Keeper’s Rest provides the perfect hideaway.
This cosy log cabin is nestled in the picturesque village of Strathyre, in quiet meadows where everything feels left behind.
My boyfriend and I were beginning to feel the dreaded ‘cabin fever’ that most are exhibiting just now thanks to strict lockdown rules and restrictions.
However, before lockdown 2.0, we were able to enjoy a much-needed escape in nature.
The charming and dog-friendly Keeper’s Rest is a traditional log cabin situated on a private estate, on the banks of the River Balvaig, near the tiny tourist town Callander.
Inside are two bedrooms, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen / living room space, perfect for rustling up some home-cooked winter meals.
The cabin runs on electric heating, so the place is toasty in a short space of time.
As soon as you step inside, it feels like you’ve well and truly left the rat race behind in this humble hideaway.
The quiet outside is blissful – but there are plenty of options to beat boredom.
For keen hillwalkers, Callander is home to the breath taking Bracklinn Falls, which provides spell-bounding scenes somewhat reminiscent of the waterfalls in nostalgic 80s adventure film The Goonies.
Situated in a beautiful, wooded gorge, the rocky location is a steeped falls on the Keltie Water and makes for some Instagrammable shots.
The nearby Ben A’an is one of Scotland’s small hills, with an easy path all the way up.
For a slightly longer journey, the nearby Beinn Eich is an easy day’s walking, with as well-trodden path for easy ascent.
During our stay, we explored some of the local boutique shops in Callander, including the gem that is The Nutcracker Christmas Shop.
As for pubs and restaurants, there are plenty to choose from in Callander, including The Tasty Fry Chip Shop, The Waverly and Roman Camp Hotel.
After enjoying a few walks in nature, we retreated back to the cabin, a warm respite from the cold, where we curled up in front of the TV to unwind with a few whiskys, enjoying the peace and quiet of seclusion.
If you have children, they’re bound to love the adventurous feel of the surroundings, and the possibility of exploring the dark outside while bearing torches.
Blairdrummond Safari Park and Stirling Castle are also a 30-minute drive from Strathyre and both a great day out for the whole family.
If you’re on a budget and searching for a socially-distanced staycation that allows you to immerse yourself in nature, then Keeper’s Rest is just for you.
Booking at Keeper’s Rest starts at £99 per night. Book here now.
